Nationwide Clean-Up Exercise by Transformation 108 Foundation: A Cleaner Ghana in 2023.

In 2023, Transformation 108 Foundation embarked on a remarkable nationwide clean-up exercise spanning all 16 regional capitals of Ghana. The initiative, themed “Clean Cities, Healthy Lives,” aimed to promote environmental sustainability, civic responsibility, and community participation in maintaining cleaner urban spaces.

A Vision for a Cleaner Nation

Transformation 108 Foundation, known for its commitment to social transformation and community development, launched the clean-up campaign as part of its broader environmental health program. The exercise sought to address the growing challenge of poor sanitation and waste management in urban centres, which has long been a concern for public health and environmental sustainability.

The Foundation’s leadership emphasised that a clean environment is essential not only for physical well-being but also for national pride and economic growth. By mobilising members across all regions, the initiative aimed to inspire a culture of cleanliness and collective responsibility.

Regional Participation and Activities

The clean-up exercise was conducted simultaneously across all regional capitals, including Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi, Ho, Sunyani, Bolgatanga, Wa, Koforidua, Cape Coast, and others. Each region witnessed massive participation from volunteers who are members of Transformation 108 Foundation, local authorities, youth groups, and corporate partners.

Activities included:

  • Desilting of gutters and drains to prevent flooding
  • Sweeping and clearing of public spaces, markets, and lorry stations
  • Collection and proper disposal of plastic waste
  • Tree planting and beautification projects in selected areas
  • Public education on waste segregation and recycling

In Accra, the exercise focused on major markets such as Makola and Kaneshie, while in Kumasi, efforts were concentrated around Kejetia and Adum. In Tamale, volunteers worked around the central business district and residential areas to remove heaps of refuse that had accumulated over time.

Collaboration and Support

The success of the clean-up exercise was made possible through strong collaboration between Transformation 108 Foundation, the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, the various Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and local community leaders. Corporate organisations also contributed by providing logistics such as gloves, waste bins, wheelbarrows, and trucks for refuse collection.

Traditional authorities and religious leaders played a key role in mobilising community members, reinforcing the message that environmental cleanliness is a shared responsibility. Media houses across the country provided coverage and helped raise awareness about the importance of maintaining clean surroundings.

Impact and Outcomes

The 2023 clean-up exercise had a visible and lasting impact. Streets, markets, and public spaces across the regional capitals were left cleaner and more organised. Beyond the physical transformation, the initiative fostered a renewed sense of civic duty among citizens. Many participants expressed their commitment to continue maintaining cleanliness in their communities.

The Foundation also used the opportunity to educate the public on sustainable waste management practices, including recycling and composting. Follow-up programs were initiated to ensure that the momentum built during the exercise would be sustained throughout the year.

Looking Ahead

Transformation 108 Foundation has announced plans to make the nationwide clean-up exercise an annual event, with expanded activities such as environmental education in schools, waste recycling projects, and partnerships with local entrepreneurs in the sanitation sector. The Foundation envisions a future where every Ghanaian city is clean, green, and healthy.

Conclusion

The 2023 nationwide clean-up exercise by Transformation 108 Foundation demonstrated the power of collective action in addressing environmental challenges. By uniting citizens, institutions, and communities under a common goal, the initiative not only improved sanitation across Ghana’s regional capitals but also strengthened the spirit of national unity and responsibility. A cleaner Ghana is indeed a healthier and more prosperous Ghana.
